Street Names and House History
Street names and house history are of particular importance when working with archival records. For Augsburg, it is important to note that until 1937 official addresses were recorded using the system of litera numbers. Only thereafter were the street names and house numbers that are familiar today introduced for official administrative purposes. A concordance between the historical litera system and modern addresses is available in the Digital Reading Room. Also of special significance are the so-called land register extracts (Grundbuchauszüge), which provide information on the owners of Augsburg’s buildings during the Early Modern period and the nineteenth century. These records are an important source for tracing the history of individual properties and their occupants over time.
If a resource is available online, a link is provided. Otherwise, the shelfmark of the copy held in the Archives Library of the Augsburg City Archives is given. For specialised topics or more in-depth literature research, we recommend consulting the Augsburg City Archives’ online catalogue (OPAC).
